Volunteers Bring Hope and Healing to Storm-Ravaged Communities in St. Landry and Avoyelles Parishes

ST. LANDRY & AVOYELLES PARISHES, La. — In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Arthur, families across St. Landry and Avoyelles Parishes are facing the difficult task of rebuilding their homes and restoring a sense of normalcy. While floodwaters have receded, the emotional and physical impact of the storm continues to be felt by hundreds of residents. Amid the devastation, however, a dedicated group of volunteers has arrived with helping hands and compassionate hearts.

The Texas-based Minuteman Disaster Response team is serving communities affected by the storm, assisting homeowners whose lives were turned upside down by widespread flooding. According to the organization’s Director of Operations, Pete Thiel, nearly 700 homes across the two parishes sustained damage, leaving many families overwhelmed by the loss of personal belongings and uncertainty about the future.

The Bible reminds us in Galatians 6:2, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” The volunteers’ willingness to serve reflects Christ’s call to love our neighbors through action and compassion.

Meeting Immediate Needs with Compassion

For many homeowners, the destruction has been heartbreaking. Floodwaters reaching nearly two feet inside homes have ruined furniture, cherished keepsakes, appliances, and countless family memories. Beyond the visible damage, hidden moisture trapped inside walls creates another serious concern—mold growth that can threaten both homes and the health of those living in them.

To help prevent future health risks, Minuteman Disaster Response volunteers are removing flood-damaged drywall and insulation, allowing homes to dry properly before rebuilding begins. This demanding work lays the foundation for safe restoration and gives families hope that recovery is possible.

Scripture teaches in Proverbs 3:27, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” By giving their time, skills, and energy, these volunteers are demonstrating God’s love in practical and meaningful ways.

The Minuteman Disaster Response team plans to remain in the area for two weeks, providing assistance to as many families as possible. Residents needing help are encouraged to visit the CORE Center in Mansura to learn about available recovery resources and volunteer support.

The challenges may seem overwhelming, but God’s Word offers encouragement in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Even in seasons of uncertainty, the Lord provides comfort through His presence and often through the caring hands of people willing to serve others.
