LAFAYETTE, La. — As families across Lafayette Parish prepare for the upcoming school year, a powerful display of community service and Christian compassion is set to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of local students. The Lafayette City Marshal’s Office will host its sixth annual Drive-Thru Backpack Giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 1, providing more than 800 students with backpacks and essential school supplies.
The event, led by City Marshal Reggie Thomas and his staff, will begin at 8 a.m. at Destiny of Faith Church on Patterson Street. Organizers will distribute more than 800 clear and mesh backpacks filled with supplies designed to help students begin the academic year prepared and confident.
Serving Families Through Faith and Action
The annual giveaway has grown into a cherished community tradition that reflects the biblical principle of serving others. Scripture reminds believers in Galatians 6:2 to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Through this outreach effort, local leaders, churches, businesses, and volunteers are coming together to help ease the financial burden many families face during back-to-school season.
Marshal Thomas emphasized that the program represents the office’s ongoing commitment to supporting local families and encouraging educational success among young people throughout the parish. Students must be present in the vehicle to receive a backpack, ensuring the supplies reach those who will directly benefit from them.
Investing in the Next Generation
Education has long been recognized as a vital tool for building stronger communities. By providing school supplies to students in need, organizers are investing not only in individual children but also in the future of Lafayette Parish.
The Bible teaches in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Community leaders say supporting students with practical resources creates opportunities for academic achievement and personal growth.
For many families, the cost of school supplies can be a significant challenge. The backpack giveaway serves as a reminder that when communities work together, needs can be met and hope can flourish.
A Community United in Compassion
The event remains open to students throughout Lafayette Parish and will continue while supplies last. Organizers are also inviting businesses, churches, and community members to become sponsors and partners in this important outreach effort.
The generosity displayed through this initiative reflects the words of Hebrews 10:24, which encourages believers to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” By giving students the tools they need for success, the community demonstrates a commitment to both educational excellence and Christ-centered compassion.
As hundreds of backpacks are distributed, the event stands as a testimony to what can be accomplished when faith, service, and community partnership come together for the benefit of children and families.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the generosity and compassion shown through this backpack giveaway. Bless City Marshal Reggie Thomas, the volunteers, sponsors, and every organization involved in serving local families. We pray for each student who receives supplies, asking that You grant them wisdom, confidence, and success in the classroom. Strengthen parents and guardians as they prepare for the school year ahead. May this act of kindness reflect Your love and inspire unity throughout Lafayette Parish. Protect our schools, teachers, and students, and help this community continue to shine as a beacon of hope and service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
