Where Play Meets Purpose: Children’s Museum Prepares Acadiana’s Children for the Future

A Vision Taking Root

For 30 years, the Children’s Museum of Acadiana has served children and families in Lafayette, Louisiana, creating a place where imagination, discovery and hands-on learning can flourish. For Executive Director Lore Linton, the museum’s growth is also the fulfillment of a dream. Fifteen years ago, while sitting in Downtown’s Parc Sans Souci, she imagined transforming the blank wall facing the museum. This year, that vision became reality through a mural by Lafayette artist Dirk Guidry.

Her story reflects the biblical truth found in Habakkuk 2:2: “Write the vision, and make it plain.” What began as a hope has become part of a larger vision for the museum’s future.

Putting Play Before Technology

As children’s lives become increasingly shaped by smartphones, computers and other digital technology, museum leaders recognize a growing challenge: how to encourage children to explore and create without allowing screens to replace meaningful play.

Linton says technology is now one of the museum’s biggest competitors, but she believes the answer is balance rather than rejection. Future exhibits are expected to incorporate computers, animation and other technology in ways that enhance children’s creativity. One planned concept would allow children’s drawings to come alive digitally, extending the story rather than replacing the handmade artwork.

That philosophy aligns with the biblical principle of Ecclesiastes 3:1, which reminds us that there is “a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Technology has a place, but childhood also needs time for imagination, movement, creativity and relationships.

Creating Space for Children to Grow

Museum co-founder Renee Bennett emphasizes that play remains central to the museum’s mission. Children can choose activities according to their interests and developmental stages, whether they are pretending to work at the new Jason’s Deli Cafe exhibit, caring for patients at Happy Paws Hospital, crafting or moving toy tractors and trucks.

Adults benefit, too. Parents are invited to enter their children’s imaginative world and rediscover the value of creativity. Such moments can strengthen families and create opportunities for connection.

Proverbs 22:6 calls families to “train up a child in the way he should go.” While the museum is not a church, its emphasis on nurturing curiosity, creativity and family interaction reflects the importance of investing in the next generation.

Learning Through Discovery

Behind the fun is a deliberate educational mission. Exhibits introduce children to vocabulary, careers, safety concepts and new areas of knowledge. Ami the Acadiana Ambulance, for example, exposes young visitors to terms such as emergency medical services, CPR and car-seat safety.

The museum is also working with local companies on new exhibits that could combine technology with education and support STEM learning. Major facility improvements are planned as well, including second-floor renovations, expansion, rooftop activation, pavilion and parking-area additions, and a new bubble tower.

A Community Called to Build Together

Linton’s vision extends beyond the museum’s walls. After visiting a children’s museum in Madison, Wisconsin, she imagined bringing a similar rooftop green space to Lafayette, potentially incorporating native plants, herbs, chickens and a waterfall.

Such a transformation will require community support. Scripture reminds believers in 1 Corinthians 3:9 that “we are labourers together with God.” The museum’s future, like many community endeavors, will depend on people willing to give their time, creativity, resources and encouragement.

The mural now brightening the museum’s once-blank wall serves as a reminder that long-held dreams can become reality. For Linton, seeing years of ideas come to life provides renewed motivation to continue serving Acadiana’s children and families.
