A Statewide Effort to Restore Louisiana’s Waterways

LAFAYETTE, La. — A new statewide campaign aimed at protecting Louisiana’s rivers, bayous, lakes, and drainage systems has launched since September 1, encouraging residents to take an active role in keeping the state beautiful and free of litter.

The “Love Our Waterways” initiative, announced by Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, seeks to address a growing environmental challenge that impacts communities across the state. According to state officials, litter cleanup costs Louisiana nearly $100 million each year, placing a significant burden on taxpayers and local governments.

Nungesser emphasized that much of the trash seen along roadsides and city streets eventually makes its way into waterways. He noted that approximately 80 percent of litter found on streets ultimately ends up in rivers, bayous, and drainage systems.

From a Christian perspective, the initiative reflects God’s call for humanity to be faithful stewards of His creation. Genesis 2:15 tells us that the Lord placed mankind in the garden “to work it and take care of it.” Caring for Louisiana’s waterways is one practical way residents can honor that responsibility.

The Hidden Journey of Litter

Environmental advocates say many people do not realize how quickly litter travels from streets into local waterways. Rainwater carries discarded trash into storm drains, which then flow into canals, streams, bayous, and rivers.

Bess Foret, Executive Director of Keep Lafayette Beautiful, explained that concerns about litter are directly connected to concerns about drainage and flooding. When trash clogs drainage systems, it can contribute to environmental and infrastructure problems that affect entire communities.

Foret noted that litter prevention is not simply about appearances—it is about protecting public spaces, preserving natural resources, and improving the quality of life for future generations.

Proverbs 12:10 teaches that righteous people care for what has been entrusted to them. This principle extends beyond personal property to the communities and natural environments God has blessed us with.

Turning Cleanup into Community Service

A key goal of the Love Our Waterways initiative is to encourage citizens, churches, civic organizations, schools, and businesses to participate in cleanup efforts throughout the year. Residents can form or join cleanup groups and work together to remove litter from neighborhoods, parks, roadsides, and waterways.

Keep Lafayette Beautiful remains available year-round to help coordinate cleanup and beautification projects. The organization provides resources and support for volunteers who want to make a positive difference in their communities.

One upcoming effort is scheduled for September 13 at the Camellia Bridge Canoe and Kayak Launch in Lafayette. Volunteers will gather to help remove litter and improve the area for residents and visitors alike.

Galatians 6:9 encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, “for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Community cleanup projects demonstrate how small acts of service can produce lasting benefits for entire communities.

Protecting Louisiana’s Future

Supporters of the initiative believe cleaner waterways can lead to healthier ecosystems, stronger tourism opportunities, improved community pride, and reduced public expenses. Funds currently spent on litter cleanup could potentially be redirected toward other priorities that benefit Louisiana families and communities.

As residents unite around this effort, leaders hope the initiative will inspire a culture of responsibility and stewardship that extends far beyond a single cleanup event.
