A Family Legacy Continues in Broussard
BROUSSARD, La. — Every day, customers walk through the doors of Tim’s Kitchen seeking a hearty meal, but many leave with something far greater: a connection to a family legacy built on hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to treating others like family.
Located on Albertson Parkway in Broussard, Tim’s Kitchen has become a gathering place where Southern comfort food and Acadiana tradition come together. For owner Timothy Sharlow Sr., the restaurant is more than a business. It is a continuation of the values and recipes passed down through generations of the Sharlow family.
“Tim’s Kitchen is an extension of Ruby’s Restaurant,” Sharlow said. “This is where we come from. This is our heritage.”
The restaurant’s menu features many of the same beloved dishes that made Ruby’s Restaurant a cherished Acadiana institution for decades. From handmade roux and family seasonings to fresh bread rolls and Sunday barbecue, every meal tells a story of faith, family, and tradition.
Lessons Learned in a Country Kitchen
The roots of that story begin with Ruby Sharlow, who learned to cook as a young girl in Church Point while following her mother and grandmother around the kitchen. Growing up in a rural farming community, she experienced firsthand the value of hard work and neighborly support.
Families planted crops, raised livestock, and shared meals together after long days in the fields. Those experiences shaped her understanding of hospitality and service.
Scripture reminds believers in Hebrews 13:2, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Ruby’s commitment to welcoming others through food became a defining characteristic of her life and career.
After spending two decades working in school cafeterias, Ruby continued her education, earned her GED, and advanced into leadership roles. Her determination demonstrated that obstacles can be overcome through faith, perseverance, and dedication.
Building a Dream Through Faith and Hard Work
In 1991, Ruby and her family transformed a small grocery store into Ruby’s Restaurant. What began as a simple dream quickly grew into a successful family business that became known for homemade favorites such as gumbo, smothered chicken, rice and gravy, turkey wings, and fresh rolls.
Ruby’s vision was never solely about serving food. She wanted to create something lasting for future generations.
“I wanted it to have a legacy for my children,” she said. “I wanted them to know that if you want to do something, you can do it.”
Her words echo Proverbs 13:22, which teaches, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” While many think of inheritance as financial wealth, Ruby’s greatest gift may be the values she passed on to her family.
A New Chapter at Tim’s Kitchen
Although Ruby’s Restaurant closed after the family sold the business in 2013, the desire to serve others never left the Sharlow family. In 2018, an opportunity emerged to open another restaurant, and Tim’s Kitchen was born.
Today, customers often recognize the familiar flavors that made Ruby’s Restaurant famous. Some walk in unaware of the connection until they taste a bread roll or family recipe and are instantly reminded of cherished memories.
Timothy Sharlow Jr. says it is especially meaningful to see multiple generations of customers continue supporting the family’s work.
At 90 years old, Ruby Sharlow remains surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her influence continues to shape the restaurant and the lives of those who enter its doors.
Her philosophy remains simple and powerful: “Treat everyone as family.”
In a world that often feels divided, that message reflects the words of Galatians 6:10: “Let us do good to all people.” Through every meal served, Tim’s Kitchen continues to demonstrate the power of kindness, community, and Christ-like hospitality.
