Investing in Health and Hope for Rural Communities
LAFAYETTE, La. — The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has received nearly $2.1 million in funding from the Louisiana Department of Health to help improve health care access and outcomes in rural communities across the state. The investment is part of the Louisiana Rural Health Transformation Program, an initiative designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing rural residents, including shortages of medical professionals, limited access to care, and financial barriers that impact local health services.
From a Christian perspective, caring for the sick and serving those in need reflects the heart of Christ’s ministry. Throughout Scripture, believers are called to care for their neighbors. Galatians 6:2 reminds us to “carry each other’s burdens,” a principle reflected in efforts to strengthen health care resources for underserved communities throughout Louisiana.
Strengthening Louisiana’s Nursing Workforce
Of the funding awarded, nearly $1.6 million will support UL Lafayette’s College of Nursing & Health Sciences. The grant will help expand academic programs, provide faculty and student support services, strengthen partnerships with rural health care facilities, and create new workforce development initiatives.
Dr. Lisa Broussard, dean of the College of Nursing & Health Sciences, emphasized the university’s role in preparing a significant portion of Louisiana’s nursing workforce. Through the grant, nursing students will gain valuable clinical experience in rural communities while helping meet critical health care needs.
The goal is to increase enrollment and retention in nursing programs while preparing more registered nurses to serve in areas where medical professionals are often in short supply. This effort reflects the biblical call found in Matthew 25:40, where Jesus teaches that serving those in need is an act of service unto Him.
Artificial Intelligence Supporting Better Care
Another $498,723 has been awarded to the University’s Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence. Researchers there are developing innovative tools that will help rural clinics better understand the health needs of their communities and identify resources available to address those needs.
Working alongside the Louisiana Center for Health Innovation and the planned National Science Foundation AHeAD Center, university experts are building an AI-powered geographic information system that will gather and organize critical health data from across the state.
This technology will help clinics identify unmet health care needs, workforce shortages, transportation barriers, and social factors that affect patient health. By providing access to comprehensive information in one location, the platform will help rural health providers make informed decisions and compete more effectively for federal funding opportunities.
Using Innovation to Serve Communities
Dr. Raju Gottumukkala, director of the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence, noted that many rural clinics lack the staff and resources necessary to gather and analyze large amounts of health data. The new AI platform will simplify that process, enabling health care leaders to quickly identify needs and determine where resources can make the greatest impact.
Researchers stress that technology alone is not the answer. The project will focus on human-centered design, reliable data, and ongoing feedback from users to ensure the system truly benefits communities and supports better decision-making.
