A Calling to Capture Life’s Cherished Moments
LAFAYETTE, La. — In a world where photographs are often stored on phones and computers, one Lafayette artist is helping families preserve treasured memories in a unique and lasting way. Through handcrafted ceramic creations, artist Kai Drobish transforms photographs of homes, churches, and meaningful landmarks into works of art that tell stories for generations.
Drobish’s creations are more than simple replicas of buildings. They serve as reminders of life’s most meaningful moments. Whether it is a family home, a beloved church, or the place where a marriage proposal took place, each piece carries emotional significance for the people who commission them.
“It’s not that they’re memories,” Drobish explained. “But when they pass by their living room wall, they might think, ‘Oh, my wedding was so great,’ or, ‘I remember the night he proposed to me there.’”
Her work reflects the biblical principle found in Psalm 77:11, which says, “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.” Just as Scripture encourages believers to remember God’s faithfulness, these artistic creations help families remember the blessings and milestones that have shaped their lives.
From Clay to Masterpiece
The process begins with a photograph and a vision. Customers simply provide an image, and Drobish carefully studies every detail before beginning her work. Starting with a thick slab of wet clay, she hand-builds architectural elements using thinner clay pieces, crafting each structure with precision and care.
Over the years, her work has crossed international borders. She has recreated lighthouses in Australia, castles in Cuba, churches in Spain and Italy, hospitals in the United Kingdom, country homes in England and Scotland, and even a château in France.
Once the clay structure is complete, it is allowed to dry before undergoing its first firing in a kiln. Drobish then hand-paints the piece, adding color and personality before firing it a second time to create the final glaze and finish.
Her studio in Lafayette is a testament to the creative process, filled with clay structures in various stages of completion, waiting to become treasured keepsakes for families around the world.
A Gift Discovered Through Faith and Passion
Drobish’s journey to becoming a full-time ceramic artist was not a straight path. Growing up with an artistic mother, creativity was always part of her life. She initially pursued ceramics in college because she loved it, but like many artists, she worried about finding a practical career.
She ultimately graduated from LSU with a degree in Political Science. Yet years later, she found herself returning to the artistic passion God had placed in her heart. Today, she makes her living as a ceramic artist and considers herself blessed to do work she genuinely loves.
Her story echoes Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” What once seemed uncertain has become a thriving career rooted in creativity and purpose.
Finding Beauty in God’s Creation
Two themes consistently inspire Drobish’s work: architecture and animals. She enjoys studying buildings, discovering new details each time she walks familiar streets. She also has a deep love for animals and often incorporates whimsical interpretations of creatures into her ceramic art.
Because not every detail can be included, Drobish carefully chooses the elements that matter most. Windows, doors, flags, and unique architectural features often become focal points in her pieces.
Her work serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate Creator. Through her artistic gifts, Drobish reflects the beauty, imagination, and craftsmanship that point back to Him.
