St. Landry Parish Inmate Dies in Training Exercise Accident

Opelousas, LA – May 23, 2024 – Gerald Lazard, a St. Landry Parish inmate was killed on Monday Morning while assisting the Sheriff’s Office with a driver training exercise at the St. Landry Parish Airport.

According to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, the inmate was picking up traffic cones used for the course when a side-by-side utility task vehicle they were in flipped over. The inmate was pinned underneath the vehicle and died at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office has not released the name of the deceased inmate pending notification of next of kin.

“This is a tragic accident, and our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased,” Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in a statement. “We are currently investigating the incident to determine exactly what happened.”

The investigation is ongoing, with a focus on reconstructing the scene and determining the cause of the accident. Speed is believed to be a factor, according to initial reports.

This incident raises questions about safety protocols for inmates involved in work programs. St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office did not disclose details about the specific training exercise or the guidelines in place for inmate participation.
