A New Vision for an Old Structure A building on Grolee Street in Opelousas, once slated for demolition, may soon undergo a dramatic transformation. Lafayette architect Stephen Ortego believes the structure holds significant potential for revitalization. His proposal to restore the building and incorporate it into the St. Landry Economic Development’s Historic District has sparked renewed interest in preserving Opelousas’ rich heritage.
A Biblical Perspective on Restoration The concept of restoration is deeply rooted in Scripture. As Isaiah 61:4 says, “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities and rebuild the places long destroyed.” Just as ancient ruins were restored to their former glory, this historic building in Opelousas can be given a new lease on life.
Economic and Community Benefits Ortego’s vision extends beyond preservation. He emphasizes the economic benefits of restoring the building, including job creation and increased tax revenue. This aligns with biblical principles of stewardship and providing for the community. As Proverbs 14:23 states, “In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”
A Call to Action As the city of Opelousas prepares for a public meeting to discuss the building’s future, we encourage residents to actively participate in the process. Let us pray for wisdom and discernment for city officials as they make decisions that will impact the community for generations to come. May this project be a catalyst for revitalization and a testament to the enduring spirit of Opelousas.
Father, we pray for Your guidance as the city of Opelousas considers the future of this historic building. May Your wisdom and provision be evident in every step of this process. Grant the city leaders the foresight to see the potential in this structure and the courage to pursue restoration. Bless the community with unity and cooperation as they work together to create a brighter future. In Jesus’ name, Amen
