Jeanerette, Louisiana, will host its 3rd Annual Creole Festival & Gumbo Cook-Off, blending vibrant culture and poignant history in a celebration of the community’s rich heritage. The festival offers a unique opportunity to explore the area’s past, including a visit to the historic Albania Mansion, a home built in the early 1800s by enslaved African Americans.
Honoring the Legacy of Albania Mansion
Liz Creel, owner of the Albania Mansion and a New Orleans native, has dedicated herself to preserving this iconic three-story home. As she reflects on the mansion’s history, Creel believes that it holds a profound message from those who built it: “I am somebody, I am important.” This mansion, constructed by enslaved labor, stands as a testament to resilience and determination, despite its painful origins. “If we hide it away, then all the lessons are lost,” Creel says, emphasizing the importance of remembering the struggles that led to this architectural beauty.
As festival-goers enjoy the food, music, and festivities, Creel hopes they will take time to appreciate the mansion’s history and the people who made it possible. This recognition honors both the beauty of the property and the legacy of those who were enslaved.
A Celebration of Community and Culture
The festival will feature a thrilling gumbo cook-off, with 19 chefs competing for the title of best gumbo. Attendees can purchase gumbo, enjoy live music, and partake in activities like pony rides and tastings. All proceeds from the event will support the revitalization of Jeanerette, helping to bring new life to the city.
