“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11
A new study from Oita University in Japan reveals that gazing upon beautiful art not only stirs the heart but also boosts brain activity. Using MRI scans, researchers studied 39 individuals as they viewed 19th-century French paintings alongside photographs that closely mirrored the artworks. While both images were considered beautiful, the paintings consistently inspired greater feelings of pleasure and higher brain activity.
God’s Gift of Beauty and Creativity
The MRI scans revealed that viewing art stimulated parts of the brain tied to emotion, memory, learning, and decision-making. When comparing the paintings to photographs, researchers found even stronger activity in areas connected to visual processing, memory, and creativity. This suggests that art—crafted by human hands inspired by God’s gift of creativity—awakens something deeper in our minds than mere replication of reality. As Exodus 35:31-32 reminds us, “He has filled them with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—to make artistic designs…”
Art as Worship and Healing
In today’s fast-paced society, pausing to appreciate beauty in art can be a form of rest and reflection, even bringing healing to weary souls. Art points us back to the Creator of beauty Himself. Just as the Psalms are poetic expressions that lift the heart toward God, visual art has the power to inspire, comfort, and renew our minds. By filling our lives with images that reflect God’s goodness, we allow our thoughts to dwell on what is “true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable” (Philippians 4:8).
