Community Unites After 25 Years Without a Shelter
OPELOUSAS, La. — For the first time in 25 years, Opelousas will have an animal shelter, thanks to the combined efforts of Scott’s Wish, Tito’s Vodka, and dedicated volunteers. For decades, the city relied solely on animal control officer Joey Stelly to manage animal care, but now the community is stepping forward to provide a safe haven for abandoned dogs. As Proverbs 12:10 teaches, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.”
Building with Compassion and Care
The new shelter is being established in a vacant building on Cross Street, with Tito’s Vodka not only offering financial support but also lending hands-on help. Volunteers from Scott’s Wish have joined in, creating enrichment areas including play yards, trails, and even aromatherapy spaces for the dogs. These features are designed to reduce stress, promote joy, and make the animals more adoptable. As Isaiah 58:10 reminds us, “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness.”
A Place of Healing and Second Chances
Mayor Julius Alsandor emphasized that the shelter will enrich the lives of animals and provide opportunities for volunteers to walk, play, and engage with the dogs as they await adoption. A mural by local artist Jerome Ford will add beauty and welcome to the space, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. This initiative reflects the spirit of Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
