Service Rooted in Compassion
LAFAYETTE PARISH — Some callings are discovered in unexpected places. For Lafayette therapist Hollie French, her path toward art therapy began not in a classroom, but in moments of serving children with special needs and their families. She recalls the first time she met an art therapist and realized the healing power of creativity. “That was the first time I had ever heard of anything like that,” French shared.
As Proverbs 11:25 reminds us, “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” Hollie’s story is a testimony to how service to others can plant seeds of healing.
Turning Grief into Creation
French’s journey is also deeply personal. As a teenager, she lost a close friend in a tragic crash. Struggling to cope, she turned to creating art. “I didn’t know how to process it… I just started making things,” she said. What began as an unconscious act of survival became a tool for expressing pain and finding hope.
This echoes Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Through creativity, Hollie discovered a way for God’s comfort to be expressed in her life.
A Family Foundation of Service
Growing up, Hollie’s family instilled values of compassion and awareness. “We sat around the dinner table talking about things that mattered, things happening in the world,” she explained. Those lessons shaped her heart to care for others and led her to create a safe space where clients could use art to find their own voices.
Creativity as a Pathway to Healing
Now, in her Lafayette office, Hollie helps clients process emotions that words often cannot capture. “This is something that’s really helpful to heal… it gives you joy, and it was a way to help give that to other people as well,” she said.
Her work mirrors Isaiah 61:3, which speaks of God giving “a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” Through art, Hollie provides a way for her clients to trade heaviness for healing.
Prayer for Healing Through Creativity
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of creativity and for those, like Hollie, who use it to bring healing and hope. Bless her work, Lord, and all who enter her care. May broken hearts find restoration, and may joy replace sorrow through the beauty You inspire. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
