ACADIA PARISH (RICHARD) — More than six decades after her passing, the memory of 12-year-old Charlene Richard continues to shine as a beacon of faith, hope, and perseverance. Known affectionately as the “Little Cajun Saint,” Charlene’s life of quiet suffering and steadfast belief is now bringing her closer to being officially recognized by the Catholic Church.
A Child of Faith and Courage
In 1959, Charlene died of acute lymphatic leukemia at just 12 years old. Yet, during her final days, she displayed a profound maturity in her faith, offering her suffering for others. “She would always ask who she was supposed to suffer for that day,” recalled Nannette Reiners, president of the Charlene Richard Foundation.
Her response reflected Romans 5:3–4: “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”
Pilgrims Gather in Her Honor
On Monday, parishioners and pilgrims filled St. Edward Catholic Church in Richard to honor Charlene with a special memorial Mass. The crowd was so large that another building had to be opened to accommodate those who wished to remember the young girl whose faith continues to inspire.
The Path to Sainthood
Charlene currently holds the title Servant of God, the first step toward canonization. The next step, being declared Venerable, could be announced soon, with celebrations expected to take place in Church Point.
Her story reminds the faithful of Matthew 19:14, where Jesus said: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life of Charlene Richard, whose faith and love in the midst of suffering continue to inspire generations. May her story lead others closer to You, and may her example remind us that even the smallest acts of faith can have eternal impact.
