Forked Island Student Reads One Million Words Over the Summer

FORKED ISLAND, LA — While many children spent their summer break scrolling on their phones, one seventh grader spent her time diving into books. Twelve-year-old Leah-Kate Harrington, a student at Forked Island E. Broussard Elementary School, achieved a remarkable milestone this summer—reading more than one million words.

A Love for Stories and History

“I always loved reading. My mom’s a big reader,” Harrington explained. “I just kept on reading, and I didn’t even notice that I had reached a million words.” Her reading list stretched from The Hunger Games to The Maze Runner to the Magic Tree House series, with a special love for historical fiction and stories that bring American history to life.

Her accomplishment reminds us of Proverbs 18:15, which says: “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.” Leah-Kate’s hunger for knowledge is a testimony to the blessing of nurturing young minds through reading.

Family Support and Classroom Leadership

Leah-Kate’s mother, Renee Harrington, also serves as her English teacher and is quick to recognize her daughter’s gifts. “She likes to participate. She helps her classmates. If no one wants to answer, I know I can count on her,” she shared. Leah-Kate, with humility and determination, credits her teacher-mother for inspiring her love of reading and learning.

Looking Toward the Future

When asked what comes next, Leah-Kate’s answer was simple: “Two million!” Her joy for learning reflects Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Just as Scripture guides, the books she reads light the way toward her future.
