When the Great Chase Leads to Shallow Waters
“Jesus replied, ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” — Matthew 22:37 (NLT)
Years ago, scientists discovered three hundred whales stranded on a beach—massive creatures that had chased small sardines into shallow waters, only to meet their end. It’s a sobering image of how something small and insignificant can lead even the mighty astray. Likewise, many of us spend our lives chasing “sardines”—minor pursuits, fleeting pleasures, and distractions that pull us away from the deep waters of God’s purpose.
When Love Becomes the Compass
Jesus simplified the whole law into two powerful commands: Love God and love your neighbor (Matthew 22:37–39). These aren’t mere suggestions; they are the heartbeat of genuine faith. When we truly love God—with all our heart, soul, and mind—our actions, attitudes, and priorities align naturally with His will. Love for God produces obedience not out of duty, but delight. And when that love overflows, it touches others—neighbors, family, even strangers—with grace and compassion.
Avoiding the Traps of Shallow Living
We live in a culture that celebrates success, busyness, and self-promotion. But in chasing worldly goals, we risk spiritual emptiness. Jesus calls us to a higher pursuit—one that begins and ends with love. If our hearts are set on Him, we won’t be stranded by shallow pursuits. As Colossians 3:2 reminds us, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
A Prayer for Focus and Love
Heavenly Father, help us stop chasing the small things that distract and drain us. Redirect our hearts toward You. Teach us to love You fully and to love others sincerely, so that every pursuit in life flows from that divine love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
