PARC celebrates 100 years of Muni Golf Course

LAFAYETTE, La. — A historic landmark that has brought generations of Lafayette residents together through recreation and fellowship is celebrating a remarkable milestone. Lafayette Consolidated Government and its Parks, Arts, Recreation & Culture Department are marking 100 years of the beloved Jay & Lionel Hebert Municipal Golf Course, the city’s oldest public golf course and a treasured piece of local history.

Often called simply “Muni” by residents, the course has stood as a gathering place for the community since it first opened in 1926. As Lafayette honors a century of recreation, tradition, and sportsmanship, many see the celebration as a reminder of the value of shared spaces that strengthen neighborhoods and relationships. Scripture reflects this spirit of stewardship and gratitude: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1), reminding believers that places of community and recreation are gifts to be cared for and enjoyed together.

Honoring the Legacy of the Hebert Brothers

The course bears the name of two Lafayette natives whose achievements left a lasting mark on the sport of golf—brothers Jay Hebert and Lionel Hebert. They remain the only brothers in golf history to each win the prestigious PGA Championship.

Lionel Hebert claimed the title in 1957, followed by Jay Hebert’s victory in 1960. Their success elevated Lafayette onto the national golf stage and inspired countless young athletes from Acadiana to pursue excellence in sports.

Their story reflects a biblical principle of perseverance and dedication. The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:24, “Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Through hard work, discipline, and determination, the Hebert brothers became examples of how commitment can lead to lasting impact both on and off the course.

A Century of Community and Recreation

To commemorate the centennial year, PARC will host a kickoff celebration on Friday, March 20 at the historic course on Mudd Avenue. Community members, golfers, and supporters are invited to attend and celebrate a location that has served as a hub for recreation and fellowship for generations.

Over the decades, the course has evolved while maintaining its classic charm. A renovation completed in 2010 introduced improved cart paths, upgraded turf conditions, and enhanced amenities, ensuring that the course continues to meet the needs of modern golfers while preserving its historic character.

Today, the course hosts a variety of events that bring people together, including the Sheriff’s Junior Golf Tournament, local high school competitions, the Lafayette City Championship, and numerous community fundraisers. These gatherings provide opportunities not only for competition but also for mentorship, encouragement, and community connection.

In many ways, such events reflect the biblical encouragement found in Hebrews 10:24: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

Celebrations Planned Throughout the Centennial Year

According to Head Golf Professional Chris Arceneaux, reaching the 100-year milestone is a moment of pride for the entire community.

“Celebrating 100 years of golf at this location is an incredible achievement for our city,” Arceneaux said. “It is equally special to celebrate 25 years under the Hebert name.”

PARC officials say the centennial celebration will continue throughout the year with several special events, including a 3-Person Scramble scheduled for July 31 and a Centennial Gala Celebration on August 1, along with additional tournaments and gatherings designed to honor the course’s rich legacy.

For many in Lafayette, the milestone represents more than a sports anniversary—it reflects a century of friendships, family memories, and community traditions formed on the greens.

Prayer for the Community

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the blessing of community spaces where people can gather, build friendships, and enjoy the beauty of Your creation. As Lafayette celebrates 100 years of this historic golf course, we pray for continued unity, safety, and joy for all who visit and participate in its events. Bless the leaders, organizers, athletes, and families who are part of this celebration. May this milestone remind the community of the importance of fellowship, perseverance, and gratitude. Guide the city into the future with wisdom and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
