Lafayette Parish Honors Bus Drivers as Faith, Service, and Community Come Together at Cajundome

A COMMUNITY GATHERS TO HONOR DAILY FAITHFUL SERVICE ON THE ROAD
LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) honored more than 200 school bus drivers during a special recognition event held Thursday, April 30 at the Cajundome, celebrating the men and women who faithfully transport students across the parish each day.

The event highlighted the often unseen but essential role bus drivers play in education. From early morning pickups to afternoon drop-offs, these workers serve as the first and last point of contact for thousands of students daily.

Their service reflects the biblical principle found in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

LEADERS RECOGNIZE THE SACRIFICE AND RESPONSIBILITY OF TRANSPORTATION STAFF
Superintendent Francis Touchet emphasized the indispensable role bus drivers play in the school system’s success, noting that the district “could not do without this transportation system.”

“These are the first ones that get to our kids. They’re the last ones that drop them off,” Touchet said, acknowledging the consistency and care required in their daily responsibilities.

Chief Operating Officer Nic Jeffers also pointed out that many families rely heavily on bus transportation due to work schedules and limited resources, making drivers a vital link in the educational process.

This dedication mirrors Matthew 25:21, which says, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” In many ways, the bus drivers of Lafayette Parish embody this spirit of faithful service—quietly ensuring children arrive safely to learn and grow.

SERVICE BEYOND DRIVING: PATIENCE, LEADERSHIP, AND CARE FOR STUDENTS
While their title suggests transportation alone, LPSS officials stressed that bus drivers often serve as mentors, peacekeepers, and daily encouragers for students of all ages.

Their responsibilities require patience, attentiveness, and the ability to manage diverse situations with calm and care. For many children, the bus ride is an important part of their daily routine—and the driver is a familiar, trusted presence.

Scripture reminds believers in Romans 12:10 to “be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” The recognition event sought to reflect this value by publicly honoring those who often serve quietly behind the scenes.

A COMMITMENT TO VALUE AND INVEST IN THOSE WHO SERVE STUDENTS
During the event, district leaders also announced a significant pay increase for bus drivers and attendants beginning next year, making Lafayette Parish one of the highest paying districts for transportation staff in Louisiana.

Officials said the decision reflects a broader commitment to valuing essential workers who ensure the safety and success of students each day.

Superintendent Touchet described the drivers as “rock stars,” emphasizing their dedication throughout the school year and the importance of taking time to honor them.

This recognition aligns with 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13, which encourages believers to respect those who work diligently among them and to hold them in high regard because of their service.

A CELEBRATION OF FAITHFULNESS IN EVERYDAY WORK
The annual recognition event at the Cajundome served as both a celebration and a reminder that community strength is built through everyday acts of service. From behind the wheel, bus drivers play a vital role in shaping the educational journey of thousands of children across Lafayette Parish.

Their work reflects a steady, faithful presence that often goes unnoticed but never goes without impact. In honoring them, the community acknowledges the value of consistency, care, and responsibility in shaping the next generation.

As Colossians 3:23 teaches, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

PRAYER FOR BUS DRIVERS, STUDENTS, AND SCHOOL FAMILIES
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the bus drivers of Lafayette Parish who faithfully serve children and families every day. Bless them with safety on the road, strength in their work, and joy in their service. We pray for the students they transport—protect them, guide them, and help them grow in wisdom and kindness. Bless school leaders as they make decisions that support and honor those who serve. May this community continue to value faithfulness, humility, and care for one another. Let every journey taken on these buses be surrounded by Your protection and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
