LAFAYETTE, La. — As families across Acadiana face increasing challenges during the summer months, FoodNet Food Bank, a program of Catholic Charities of Acadiana, is calling on residents to join together in a simple but powerful mission: helping feed their neighbors. The organization has launched its annual Summer “Grab One Extra” Food Drive, encouraging shoppers throughout the region to purchase and donate non-perishable food items while grocery shopping.
The initiative comes at a critical time when many families experience heightened food insecurity due to the absence of school meal programs and increased household expenses. Organizers believe that even the smallest act of generosity can have a lasting impact on families struggling to put food on the table.
Small Acts of Kindness Creating a Big Impact
According to FoodNet leaders, the campaign is built on a simple concept: ask every shopper to purchase one additional shelf-stable food item and place it in a collection bin before leaving the store. While a single can of food may seem insignificant, thousands of donations combined can provide thousands of meals for local families.
Ben Broussard, Chief of External Affairs for Catholic Charities of Acadiana, emphasized that the strength of the campaign lies in the collective compassion of the community. As food pantry demand rises during the summer, every contribution helps bridge the gap for households facing difficult circumstances.
This spirit of generosity reflects the biblical teaching found in Hebrews 13:16: “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Community leaders say the campaign offers residents a practical opportunity to live out their faith through service to others.
Meeting Growing Needs Across Acadiana
FoodNet Food Bank serves a vast network of partner ministries and food pantries throughout Acadiana. Through these partnerships, food is distributed to individuals, seniors, children, and families experiencing hardship.
Last year alone, FoodNet provided more than 32,000 supplemental grocery bags through its hunger-relief network, helping countless households access nutritious food during challenging times. The ministry’s ongoing work demonstrates the importance of community support in addressing hunger at the local level.
Scripture repeatedly calls believers to care for those in need. Proverbs 19:17 teaches, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done.” Faith leaders throughout the region note that feeding the hungry remains one of the clearest demonstrations of Christ’s love in action.
Local Donations Staying Local
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Summer “Grab One Extra” Food Drive is that every donated item remains within Acadiana. Food collected through participating grocery stores directly benefits local families facing food insecurity.
Collection bins have been placed near store entrances and exits at participating locations, including Adrien’s Supermarket, Albertsons stores in Lafayette, and Champagne’s Market. Organizers hope widespread participation will help ensure food shelves remain stocked throughout the summer season.
The campaign serves as a reminder that communities are strongest when neighbors care for one another. Galatians 6:2 encourages believers to “carry each other’s burdens,” a principle many residents are embracing through this effort.
Faith, Compassion, and Community Working Together
As summer continues, FoodNet’s campaign stands as a testament to the power of unity and compassion. By simply grabbing one extra item during a routine shopping trip, residents can help provide hope and nourishment to families experiencing hardship.
For many struggling households, these donations represent more than food—they serve as a reminder that they are seen, valued, and supported by a caring community. Through faith-inspired generosity, Acadiana continues to demonstrate the love of Christ in practical and meaningful ways.
