BELL CITY, La. — The Calcasieu Parish Planning and Zoning Board has approved plans for a large-scale solar energy project in Bell City, marking a significant development for Southwest Louisiana’s energy future. The proposal, submitted by locally owned Sweet Lake Land and Oil Company in partnership with Southern Prairie Solar, received approval in an 8-1 vote during the board’s June meeting.
The project will utilize approximately 1,100 acres near Lionel Derouen and Fruge roads and is expected to generate 200 megawatts of electricity along with 55 megawatts of battery storage capacity. Supporters believe the development will strengthen regional energy infrastructure while contributing to economic growth in the area.
As communities continue to seek responsible ways to meet future energy demands, many local leaders see the project as an opportunity to balance innovation with stewardship. Broad Support from Community and Industry Leaders

The Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance expressed confidence that the project aligns with long-term regional growth plans. Meanwhile, Jeff Davis Electric Co-op voiced support, citing anticipated improvements to electrical infrastructure and the potential for long-term benefits to customers.
Several nearby residents also submitted letters backing the project, reflecting a level of community acceptance that differed from previous solar proposals considered in the parish.
Supporters noted that responsible development can create opportunities for future generations while strengthening local resources. Concerns Remain Among Some Residents
Despite the approval, not all community members were convinced the project should move forward without caution. During the meeting, resident Steven Vance raised concerns about potential impacts on drainage, stormwater runoff, and hurricane-related flooding.
Questions were also raised regarding how large-scale solar developments may affect neighboring property values. Previous studies examining solar projects in rural communities have found varying impacts on nearby housing prices, contributing to ongoing debate among residents throughout Louisiana and beyond.
Project representatives responded by explaining that environmental safeguards and stormwater management plans are expected to be implemented during construction. Engineers involved with the project stated they anticipate limited land leveling and plan to follow regulatory requirements designed to reduce erosion and runoff.
The concerns expressed by residents highlight the need for wisdom and transparency throughout the development process. James 1:5 encourages believers, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.”

Construction is expected to begin in late 2027 and continue for approximately 12 to 18 months. While the project will create only a small number of permanent jobs, supporters believe its long-term value lies in strengthening energy reliability and supporting regional growth.
