LAFAYETTE, La. — A remarkable story of perseverance, discipline, and unwavering determination has placed a Lafayette professor among a very select group of mountaineers while offering a powerful reminder that faith and endurance often go hand in hand.
Dr. Linus Wilson, a finance professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, recently became the first known Louisiana resident to stand atop the highest natural point in all 50 U.S. states. His historic achievement was completed on June 17, 2026, after successfully reaching the summit of Mount McKinley in Alaska’s Denali National Park. Standing at 20,310 feet, the mountain is the tallest peak in North America and represents one of the most demanding climbs on Earth.
Scripture reminds believers, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). While climbing requires tremendous physical preparation, Christians recognize that true strength comes from God, who equips His people to endure life’s greatest challenges.
An Extraordinary Journey of Endurance
Wilson’s accomplishment followed a grueling 29-day solo expedition in one of the world’s harshest environments. Carrying more than 200 pounds of equipment, food, fuel, and survival gear, he faced freezing temperatures, dangerous terrain, and complete self-reliance above basecamp, where no commercial support is permitted.
“The solo expedition to the top of Mount McKinley was the most physically demanding thing I had done in my life,” Wilson shared.
To commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Wilson carried an American flag to the summit, symbolizing both personal achievement and national pride.
His perseverance echoes the words of Hebrews 12:1: “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Wilson’s journey serves as a vivid illustration that lasting accomplishments are often the result of patience, preparation, and refusing to quit.
Prepared for the Climb Before the Mountain
Preparation for the expedition extended far beyond hiking trails. Wilson devoted himself to years of strength training, even winning his age group in Men’s Physique competitions in both Louisiana and Oklahoma before attempting the climb.
Unlike many mountaineers who focus primarily on cardiovascular endurance, Wilson emphasized physical strength to carry nearly 92 pounds of food and essential supplies throughout the expedition. Consuming more than 4,600 calories daily, he still lost weight during the climb but maintained the strength necessary to continue.
“I knew I may never be in better physical shape with a better opportunity,” Wilson said. “I had to keep trying as long as there was hope.”
His determination reflects the encouragement found in Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
A Legacy That Inspires Others
Wilson began pursuing the highest point in every state in 2021 while traveling across America in a small travel trailer, documenting his experiences in his book COVID Road Trip: An RV Adventure. Along the way, he also conducted academic research on mountaineering and the statistical challenges associated with climbing America’s highest peaks.
As of early 2026, only 396 people had successfully completed the challenge of climbing the highest natural point in all 50 states, placing Wilson among an exceptionally rare group of adventurers.
His story serves as more than a record-breaking accomplishment. It reminds believers that every mountain—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—is an opportunity to trust God, persevere through hardship, and glorify the One who created both the mountains and those who climb them.
