St. Martinville Police Launch Community Walks to Build Trust, Strengthen Neighborhoods, and Serve with Compassion

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. — A renewed commitment to building stronger relationships between law enforcement and residents is taking shape in St. Martinville as the city’s police department launches a new Community Walk initiative designed to bring officers directly into the neighborhoods they serve.

Rather than waiting for citizens to visit the police department with questions or concerns, Interim Police Chief Andrew Broussard and his officers are taking the first step by walking door-to-door, meeting families where they live, listening to their needs, and offering resources that promote safer communities. The first Community Walk is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. in District One, marking the beginning of an outreach effort that will eventually reach all five districts throughout the city.

Scripture reminds us in Philippians 2:4, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” This initiative reflects that servant-hearted principle by placing the focus on listening, serving, and building meaningful relationships.

Building Bridges Through Presence and Conversation

District One includes neighborhoods surrounding North Main Street near ShopRite and William Street. During the walk, officers will provide residents with informational flyers covering crime prevention, home security tips, and guidance on how to properly contact emergency services through 911.

Chief Broussard explained that the vision extends far beyond distributing information.

The goal is to create opportunities for genuine conversations with residents, learning firsthand about their concerns and discovering ways the department can better serve every neighborhood. Instead of asking the community to come to them, officers are choosing to meet people on their front porches, sidewalks, and front yards.

This approach reflects the wisdom found in James 1:19, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Listening is often the first step toward healing relationships and building trust.

Serving the Community with Integrity

The Community Walk initiative represents the first major public outreach effort under Chief Broussard’s leadership as interim police chief. By maintaining a regular schedule of visits every two to three weeks, the department hopes to establish lasting relationships built on communication, transparency, and mutual respect.

Residents are encouraged to come outside, greet officers, ask questions, and share ideas about making their neighborhoods safer. These simple conversations have the potential to create stronger partnerships that benefit families, businesses, and future generations.

The Bible teaches in Micah 6:8, “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Justice is strengthened when communities and those sworn to protect them walk together with humility, respect, and a shared commitment to peace.
