SOWELA Brings Culinary Medicine Program to Fort Polk, Offering Hope Through Health and Education

LAKE CHARLES, La. — SOWELA Technical Community College is expanding its innovative Culinary Medicine program to Fort Polk this fall, creating new opportunities for military personnel, their families, healthcare professionals and community members to strengthen both their knowledge and their health. Registration for the Fall 2026 semester is now open, with limited seating available for this unique educational experience that combines culinary arts with evidence-based healthcare practices.

A Mission of Healing Through Knowledge

As the first community college in Louisiana to offer an evidence-based Culinary Medicine program, SOWELA continues to lead in preparing students to understand the powerful connection between nutrition, food preparation and disease prevention. The program equips participants with practical cooking skills, nutrition education and meal-planning techniques while exploring how healthy food choices can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses and improve overall wellness.

From a Christian perspective, caring for one’s physical health reflects faithful stewardship of God’s gifts. Scripture reminds believers in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies are “temples of the Holy Spirit,” encouraging Christians to honor God through healthy living. Programs such as Culinary Medicine provide practical tools that help individuals make wise decisions that can positively impact families and communities for generations.

Serving Those Who Serve

SOWELA Culinary Medicine Instructor Stephanie Stanfield expressed excitement about bringing the program to Fort Polk, noting that students will gain valuable knowledge that applies across healthcare, hospitality and wellness careers while learning how nutrition directly influences health outcomes.

Fort Polk Education Services Officer Dr. Glenn McMann also highlighted the partnership as an important investment in the health of soldiers and their loved ones. As part of the Army’s Performance Triad of Sleep, Activity and Nutrition, the program aligns with efforts to improve readiness while strengthening the surrounding community through education.

The Bible teaches in Galatians 6:2 to “carry each other’s burdens,” and initiatives like this demonstrate how educational institutions and military organizations can work together to support the physical and emotional well-being of those who faithfully serve the nation.

Education That Builds Stronger Communities

Students may pursue Culinary Medicine as a concentration within SOWELA’s Culinary Arts Associate of Applied Science degree or earn a standalone Technical Diploma. Coursework is delivered online and enhanced through hands-on instruction in a teaching kitchen, where students develop practical skills in healthy cooking, food preparation and nutritional planning.

The curriculum also explores important topics including food accessibility, cultural preferences, environmental influences and individualized nutrition strategies. These lessons prepare graduates to make meaningful contributions in healthcare settings, restaurants, community wellness programs and public health initiatives.

The educational opportunity reflects the wisdom found in Proverbs 4:7, which teaches, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.” By combining scientific knowledge with compassionate service, students are equipped to become instruments of healing within their communities.

Community Invitation and Looking Ahead

A Culinary Medicine Meet-and-Greet was scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, from 11:00 a.m. until noon at the Fort Polk USO. Guests will have the opportunity to meet faculty members, explore career pathways, learn about the Mediterranean Diet Score and discover how the program can support healthier lifestyles. Scholarships and financial aid are available for qualified students, making this opportunity accessible to many who desire to serve others through wellness and education.

As Christians continue seeking ways to love their neighbors in practical ways, programs that promote health, education and compassionate care serve as reminders that faith is often demonstrated through everyday acts of service, wisdom and stewardship.

Prayer for the Community

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the opportunity to bring education, healing and hope to the Fort Polk community. Bless the students, instructors, military personnel, healthcare workers and families who will participate in this program. Grant them wisdom, strength and good health as they learn skills that can bless others. We pray for every individual facing illness or chronic disease, asking for Your healing hand and Your peace to surround them. May this program become a source of encouragement, compassion and renewed purpose, and may all who participate use their knowledge to glorify You by serving others with excellence and love. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
