Acadiana’s Venezuelan Community Responds with Faith and Compassion Following Devastating Earthquakes

LAFAYETTE, La. — In the wake of devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela, members of Acadiana’s Venezuelan community are turning heartbreak into hope by rallying neighbors to support those affected by the disaster. What began as concern expressed by customers inside Patacón Latin Restaurant has grown into a community-wide effort marked by generosity, prayer and compassion.

Daniel Lugo and his cousin, Eli Mendoza, were working at their family’s Youngsville restaurant when customers began asking about the unfolding tragedy and offering prayers for the people of Venezuela. Although their family is from western Venezuela rather than the capital region, they quickly realized the magnitude of the disaster as reports and messages from loved ones revealed widespread destruction and suffering.

For believers, moments like these remind us that the Church is called to bear one another’s burdens. Galatians 6:2 teaches, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Across Acadiana, neighbors have embraced that calling by standing alongside a community grieving from thousands of miles away.

From Heartbreak to Action

As news of the earthquakes spread, Lugo and Mendoza refused to remain idle. Using the Patacón Latin Restaurant social media platforms, they shared updates, connected with Venezuelans throughout Louisiana and organized a relief campaign to collect essential supplies.

Donations poured in from generous residents eager to help. Clothing, shoes, diapers, medical supplies and first-aid items quickly filled collection areas at the restaurant’s Lafayette and Youngsville locations. The overwhelming response reflected the compassionate spirit of Acadiana, where people often respond to tragedy with open hearts and willing hands.

Working alongside Diana Araujo and Andersson García of D.A. Special Services, the family coordinated transportation through a Houston-area shipping company to begin delivering supplies to those in need. The response became so overwhelming that organizers eventually reached their current shipping capacity, prompting them to temporarily suspend the acceptance of physical donations.

Their efforts reflect the words of Proverbs 19:17: “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done.” Every donated item became a tangible expression of God’s love reaching across borders.

Hope Beyond the Headlines

While physical donations have paused, Lugo encourages those wishing to continue helping to support reputable humanitarian organizations that are providing relief on the ground. Financial contributions can assist with emergency aid, medical care and long-term recovery efforts for families whose lives have been forever changed.

For Lugo, watching the devastation unfold through social media and conversations with family members has been emotionally difficult. Yet the kindness shown by strangers has offered encouragement during an incredibly painful season.

He shared that many donors gave despite having limited resources themselves. Their willingness to sacrifice for people they have never met stands as a powerful reminder that compassion often shines brightest during times of crisis.

Scripture reminds us in Hebrews 13:16, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” The generosity displayed throughout Acadiana demonstrates that love in action remains one of the greatest testimonies of Christian faith.
