Celebrating America’s Quarter Millennium: A Call for Citizen Archivists

In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the National Archives has launched an exciting initiative inviting volunteers to assist in transcribing and digitizing historical documents written in cursive. With millions of handwritten records stored in the Archives, many Americans today may struggle to read these documents, as cursive writing has largely disappeared from modern education. This project, titled the Citizen Archivist initiative, seeks to preserve and make accessible valuable pieces of history for future generations.

The Revolutionary War Pension Project

One of the most significant goals of this initiative is the Revolutionary War Pension Project. This collaborative effort between the National Park Service and the Archives focuses on transcribing over 2.3 million pages of pension files related to the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War and their widows. The pension records provide unique insights into the lives of these early American heroes, many of whom were members of the Continental Army, serving directly under General George Washington.

Preserving the Legacy of America’s First Veterans

Initially, pensions were only available to soldiers who had served in the Continental Army, but over time, the program expanded to include those who served in local militias and their widows. Each pension file serves as a portal to the past, shedding light on the personal stories of the men and women who helped secure American independence. More than 4,000 volunteers have already transcribed over 80,000 pages, with more than 2,300 records fully transcribed, ensuring that these invaluable documents remain accessible for years to come.
