Asteroid No Longer Poses Threat to Earth, Scientists Confirm

After months of intense observation, scientists have confirmed that the asteroid 2024 YR4 no longer poses a threat to Earth. Initially discovered in December, the asteroid made headlines as its potential to strike Earth in 2032 was once estimated at 3%. However, recent findings by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have significantly reduced the risk, with odds now at a negligible 0.001%, ensuring Earth’s safety for the foreseeable future.

From High Risk to Safe Passage

When first detected, asteroid 2024 YR4 had the world’s attention, as concerns mounted over its potential impact. The possibility of a collision in 2032 placed it atop the asteroid-risk list, but after careful monitoring, the risk has been substantially diminished. ESA now estimates the chance of impact at just 0.001%, and NASA’s calculations have it at 0.0027%. Scientists now confidently state that the asteroid will safely pass Earth in 2032, with no significant threat for the next century.

An Ongoing Vigilance

While the asteroid no longer poses a danger to Earth, there remains a slight possibility that it could impact the moon on December 22, 2032. NASA will continue tracking the asteroid with the help of the Webb Space Telescope, which will soon provide a more precise measurement of its size. The asteroid, measuring between 130 feet and 300 feet in diameter, is expected to disappear from view in the coming months.
