“Lord, Where Were You?” A Cry of Real Pain

We’ve all experienced moments in life that leave us questioning, “Where was God?” In times of deep crisis, when things seem out of our control, we may feel like Martha did in John 11:21, when she said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” In the midst of personal loss or heartbreak, it’s easy to wonder where God is when we need Him most.

The Honest Questions We Ask

Martha’s question echoes the deep pain that many of us experience in difficult circumstances. We may find ourselves saying, “Lord, where were You when my parents divorced?” or “Where were You when I got that diagnosis?” These questions reflect the rawness of grief and frustration that we sometimes hold in our hearts. But just as Jesus didn’t rebuke Martha for her honest question, God doesn’t rebuke us for expressing our pain. In fact, He invites us to come to Him with our honest emotions and doubts.

It’s Okay to Express Our Pain

The Bible offers numerous examples of individuals who cried out to God in their suffering. David, in the Psalms, often poured out his heart before God, expressing feelings of fear, anger, and abandonment. Psalm 62:8 (NIV) says, “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” When we face pain, God doesn’t expect us to hide our feelings. He longs for us to bring our whole selves before Him, trusting that He will listen and comfort us.

Healing Through Honest Prayer

In moments of pain, I have cried out to God just as Martha did. I’ve asked hard questions, but I also remind myself of God’s promises. Even in my grief, I find comfort in knowing that God is always present, and that He can bring peace in the midst of our pain. While our questions may not always be answered immediately, we can trust that God sees us, He hears us, and He will provide the strength we need.

A Prayer for Strength

Heavenly Father, we come before You with our hearts full of questions, pain, and grief. We trust that You see us in our moments of sorrow, and we pour out our emotions before You. Help us to remember Your promises and to find peace even in the midst of uncertainty. Fill us with Your comfort and remind us that we are never alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
