WCTEC Equips Students for Success with Hands-On Learning

The Washington Career and Technical Education Center (WCTEC) is preparing high school students for the future through a variety of hands-on courses that provide both practical skills and valuable experience. The program offers 13 courses, including Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Workplace Safety, and the Medical Assistant Program, all of which provide dual enrollment opportunities. This allows students to earn college credits that transfer directly to South Louisiana Community College (SLCC), giving them a head start on their post-secondary education. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” WCTEC’s mission aligns with this biblical principle, offering students the opportunity to build a strong foundation for their future careers.

A Head Start on College and Career

Students like Donavon Lewis recognize the benefits of this program, noting how it shortens the time needed to earn a degree. “When you graduate, you don’t have to be in college for four years if you’ve already taken the courses,” said Lewis. This program is a blessing for those looking to enter the workforce sooner, allowing them to develop essential skills while still in high school. In Ecclesiastes 9:10, Scripture says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” These students are embracing this opportunity and using their talents to build a better future.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

For many students, like culinary student Ethan Sonnier, hands-on experience offers lessons that go beyond the textbook. “It taught me a lot about kitchen communication,” said Sonnier. The practical learning environment provides clarity and confidence to students like Rebecca Gelner, who finds that real-world practice makes the lessons much clearer and applicable to everyday life.
