Creativity Beyond Limitations
LAFAYETTE – The Lafayette Art Association and Gallery recently hosted the Art of Belonging exhibit, a month-long celebration of the artistic gifts of individuals with disabilities. Featuring the work of 17 local artists, the exhibit highlighted the truth found in 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Brothers United by Art
Among the featured artists were twin brothers Coby and Chase Bergeron, age 25. The two, who live with developmental delays, have been refining their craft at St. Pierre’s Center for the Arts since 2021. “Art means we learn, but it just takes a little longer to process,” Coby explained. Chase added that art allows him to return to a piece, even weeks later, and find new ways to express himself. Their perseverance reflects Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
A Vision That Inspires
Margo Baker, president of the Lafayette Art Association, emphasized that the focus of the exhibit was never on limitations, but on creativity and vision. “I want people to focus on the art, and not the artist’s disability,” she said. Through vibrant paintings, drawings, and mixed media, the artists reminded visitors that God’s image is reflected in every person, as affirmed in Genesis 1:27.
Faith Expressed Through Art
Supported by Leading Home Care, the exhibit also highlighted the importance of community, belonging, and encouragement. Just as Romans 12:6 teaches, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us,” these artists demonstrated that beauty shines brightest when shared.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, thank You for blessing each person with unique gifts. We pray for the artists who shared their vision, for their families who encourage them, and for a community that learns to see ability through Your eyes. May we continue to uplift and support one another in love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
