LAFAYETTE – Families across Acadiana are struggling under the weight of rising insurance costs, interest rates, and the unexpected expense of home repairs. For many, these hardships threaten not only financial stability but also the security of a place to call home. Yet, the Lafayette Consolidated Government has stepped in to provide a beacon of hope through its housing counseling and grant programs. As Psalm 82:3 reminds us, “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.”

Stories of Renewal and Relief
For Geraldine Decuir, a Lafayette resident who built her family’s home in the 1970s, the journey has been difficult. Battling cancer and relying on Social Security, the costs of repairing her aging home became overwhelming. Through the Housing Rehabilitation Program, she received $50,000 worth of repairs, from plumbing to roofing, giving her a safe and renewed home. Her testimony reflects God’s promise in Isaiah 61:4: “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated.”

Programs That Strengthen Families
The Jessie Livingston Taylor Center for Housing and Community Services offers programs such as down payment assistance for first-time buyers, accessibility ramp installations, minor and major rehabilitation grants, and financial literacy workshops. Many elderly and disabled residents are prioritized, ensuring that the most vulnerable are cared for. These efforts echo Proverbs 14:21: “Whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy.”
