Local Toxins Linked to Higher Autism Risk

A large-scale study from the University of Chicago has reinforced previous findings linking autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual disabilities to environmental toxins. The research analyzed data representing nearly one-third of the U.S. population, measuring autism incidence alongside exposure to toxic substances such as pesticides, plasticizers, lead, and pharmaceuticals.

Urbanization and Environmental Exposure

The study revealed that areas with higher environmental toxin exposure had significantly higher rates of autism. While both boys and girls were affected, the correlation was stronger among girls. Proximity to urban areas also increased the likelihood of developing ASD; for every 1% rise in urbanization, autism and intellectual disability rates increased by roughly 3%. These findings highlight the real-world impact of pollution, industrial chemicals, and urban living on children’s neurological development in today’s society.
