Remembering a Defining Storm
LAFAYETTE, LA – As Louisiana approaches the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2025, memories of the devastation remain etched in the hearts of many. For Marc Creswell, director of Acadian AirMed Services, the storm marked not only a test of courage but also a defining moment in his career of service. “It was tough,” Creswell recalled. “You saw a lot—a lot of people suffering.” Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Katrina’s scars remain, but so does the testimony of God’s sustaining presence.
Rescue Missions in the Floodwaters
When the Category 3 hurricane struck, Creswell was in New Orleans showcasing a helicopter. Within hours, he returned to Lafayette, equipped the aircraft, and launched into rescue missions. He later helped coordinate a massive effort involving 44 helicopters to evacuate those stranded by floodwaters. “We were a ‘Yes ma’am’ and ‘Yes sir’ service,” Creswell said, describing how structured protocols gave way to urgent improvisation. Proverbs 3:27 declares, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” Creswell and his team embodied this call to action.
A Rescue That Still Inspires
Among countless rescues, one remains especially powerful: a newborn named Drew, who had just undergone heart surgery when floodwaters trapped her family. AirMed evacuated the infant to Lafayette, reuniting her with her parents later that day. Nearly two decades later, Drew reached out to Creswell with gratitude. Stories like hers shine light through tragedy, echoing Isaiah 61:3, which promises that God will give us “a crown of beauty instead of ashes.”
Prayer for Healing and Hope
Heavenly Father, we remember the lives forever changed by Hurricane Katrina. We thank You for first responders like Marc Creswell, whose courage saved many. Bless all survivors with peace, healing, and hope. May we never forget to serve one another in love, even in life’s greatest storms. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
