Former New Iberia Detective Inspires Others to Choose Hope, Health, and Faith Through Life’s Challenges

IBERIA PARISH, La. — At 67 years old, former New Iberia Police detective Joe Dressel continues to demonstrate that true strength is measured not by the amount of weight a person can lift, but by the determination to keep moving forward through life’s greatest challenges. His journey of perseverance, resilience, and hope serves as an inspiration to people of all ages who may be facing physical, emotional, or mental struggles.

For Dressel, staying active has never been about appearance. Instead, fitness has become a way to preserve his health, enjoy more time with his family, and encourage others never to give up, regardless of the obstacles they encounter.

God reminds us in Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Dressel’s story reflects the endurance that comes from refusing to surrender when life becomes difficult.

Finding Strength After Loss

More than three decades ago, Hurricane Andrew dramatically changed Dressel’s daily routine when it destroyed the gym where he exercised. What seemed like a simple disruption soon became a serious personal struggle. Without the physical activity that had been part of his life, his physical and emotional health declined rapidly. Within months, he lost significant weight, underwent numerous medical tests, and searched for answers that doctors could not immediately provide.

A simple conversation with his physician changed everything. The doctor reminded him that fitness wasn’t limited to a gym building. Taking that advice to heart, Dressel laced up his running shoes and began exercising outdoors. That single decision became the beginning of a healthier lifestyle that carried him through many years of serving his community in law enforcement.

Scripture teaches in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Sometimes God opens new paths when familiar ones disappear, reminding us that our greatest source of strength is found in Him.

Choosing Hope Over Despair

Throughout his career as a detective, Dressel witnessed both the rewards and the heavy burdens that often accompany serving others. While he treasured the brotherhood and camaraderie among fellow officers, years of stress eventually took a toll on his health. Nearly 20 years ago, he was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

Rather than allowing those diagnoses to define his future, Dressel made a conscious decision to fight back. Through exercise, determination, and a positive outlook, he chose hope over hopelessness.

The Bible encourages believers in Joshua 1:9, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Dressel’s testimony reminds us that while life’s battles are real, courage and faith can help carry us through them.

Living for Family and Inspiring Others

Today, Dressel’s greatest motivation is his family. Every time he exercises, he wears a hat bearing the names of his four grandchildren—a daily reminder of why he continues striving to stay healthy. His desire is simple: to remain active and present for those he loves for as many years as possible.

His message to others is one of encouragement. No matter a person’s age or current circumstances, it is never too late to take the first step toward better health. Whether that means going for a walk, visiting a gym, or simply choosing to move more each day, every positive step matters.

As believers, we are reminded in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and are to be cared for with gratitude and wisdom. By prioritizing both physical and emotional well-being, we honor God and equip ourselves to better serve our families and communities.

Joe Dressel’s journey is more than a story about fitness—it is a testimony of perseverance, hope, and choosing life each day. His example reminds us that with faith, determination, and God’s strength, no challenge is too great to overcome.
